A dramatic depiction of a scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest, featuring Prospero, Miranda, and Caliban amidst a turbulent coastal storm.
George Romney, a prominent British portraitist of the eighteenth century, occasionally turned his attention to literary subjects. This work depicts a scene from William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. The composition focuses on the dramatic interaction between the central characters against a turbulent, atmospheric backdrop. To the left, Prospero and his daughter Miranda are caught in the elements, their figures rendered with the fluid brushwork characteristic of Romney's later period. Nearby, the figure of Caliban is visible, observing the pair from the shadows of the rugged terrain.
The setting is dominated by a gnarled, wind-swept tree that anchors the composition, its form echoing the chaotic energy of the storm. Romney employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep red of Miranda's garment, which draws the eye toward the primary action. The distant sea, visible beyond the rocky outcrop, suggests the wider scope of the play's narrative, where the shipwreck serves as the catalyst for the unfolding drama. The sky is filled with heavy, rolling clouds, typical of the dramatic weather effects favoured by artists of the era to convey emotional intensity.
Romney's approach to this subject reflects the growing interest in Shakespearean themes among British artists during the late eighteenth century. Rather than focusing on the static portraiture for which he was known, this piece demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into a narrative environment. The interplay of light and shadow across the uneven ground and the textured foliage provides a sense of depth, while the figures remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal balance and the sense of movement inherent in the scene.
