A refined ink and light colour painting by Kusumi Morikage, depicting a mounted samurai in motion with characteristic Edo period minimalism.
Kusumi Morikage, a student of the Kano school, produced this work during the Edo period. The composition reflects the artist's departure from the rigid formality of his training, favouring a more personal, expressive approach to ink painting. The samurai is depicted in motion, mounted on a horse that appears to gallop across the pictorial space. The artist employs a restrained palette, using ink washes to define the form of the horse and the rugged terrain, while subtle touches of colour highlight the warrior's armour and the flowering branch in the upper right corner.
The negative space surrounding the figure is characteristic of the period's aesthetic, allowing the viewer to focus on the action of the rider. The brushwork is precise, demonstrating the technical control expected of a Kano-trained artist, yet the overall mood remains quiet and contemplative. The inclusion of the flowering branch suggests a seasonal context, perhaps referencing the fleeting nature of life, a common theme in Japanese art of the seventeenth century. The horse is rendered with a sense of energy, its mane and tail captured with fluid, calligraphic strokes that contrast with the more static, solid form of the rider.
This print captures the essence of Morikage's style, which often featured figures in natural settings rendered with a light, airy touch. The work avoids excessive detail, instead relying on the economy of line to convey the narrative. It is a fine example of the transition between traditional academic painting and the more individualistic styles that emerged in the later seventeenth century. The balance between the solid figure and the expansive, empty background creates a sense of distance and atmosphere, typical of the hanging scroll format from which this image is derived.
