A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a playful mock marriage ceremony within an eighteenth-century Japanese interior.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a playful social scene, often interpreted as a mock marriage ceremony among members of the pleasure quarters. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to a career as a printmaker, was known for his refined depictions of figures within the Edo period social hierarchy. The composition features a group of individuals gathered in an interior space, defined by sliding shoji screens and a decorative folding screen featuring a monochrome ink wash painting.
The central action involves a figure pouring liquid into a cup held by another, mimicking the ritualised exchange of sake found in traditional wedding ceremonies. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, rendered with the characteristic line work of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist employs a balanced palette of muted earth tones, soft reds, and ochre, which provides a sense of domestic warmth. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, typical of the period, with the figures arranged around a low table.
Koryūsai was a prolific artist, particularly noted for his series of prints that explored the lives of courtesans and their companions. This work belongs to a larger set, indicated by the cartouche in the upper right corner. The attention to detail in the textiles and the subtle expressions on the faces of the participants suggest a light-hearted, theatrical atmosphere. The inclusion of a bonsai-style arrangement and the specific architectural elements of the room ground the scene in the aesthetic sensibilities of eighteenth-century Japan. This print offers a glimpse into the social pastimes of the era, where performance and role-play were common forms of entertainment. The print remains a representative example of the artist's skill in capturing human interaction within a structured, decorative environment.
