A detailed 1787 etching by Johann Adam Friedrich Rauscher, depicting a pastoral scene with a man and his bull near a stream.
This etching by Johann Adam Friedrich Rauscher, dated 1787, captures a quiet moment in a rural setting. The composition is structured around the interplay between the rugged terrain and the flowing water of the stream. Rauscher employs a variety of line weights to define the textures of the scene: the dense, cross-hatched foliage of the trees contrasts with the lighter, more open lines used to render the sky and the distant hills.
The figure of the man and his bull are positioned in the middle distance, providing a sense of scale to the environment. The artist focuses on the natural elements, using precise mark-making to suggest the movement of the water as it rushes over rocks. The trees, with their gnarled branches and heavy canopy, dominate the right side of the frame, creating a natural frame for the view beyond.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of late eighteenth-century printmaking. Rauscher uses the etching process to create a tonal range that suggests depth without relying on colour. The light source appears to come from the left, casting subtle shadows that give volume to the rocky outcrops and the bank of the stream. This print is a clear example of the period's interest in pastoral subjects, where human activity is integrated into the natural world. The work remains a study in balance, where the artist carefully manages the density of the lines to ensure the scene remains readable and coherent. The paper shows the characteristic plate mark of an intaglio print, confirming its status as an original impression from the copper plate.
