A satirical lithograph by Charles Vernier from the Les Grisettes series, depicting a social encounter between two women and military officers in Paris.
Charles Vernier was a prominent French lithographer and caricaturist, active during the mid-nineteenth century. This work, titled Un refus héroïque, belongs to his series Les Grisettes. The term grisette referred to young, working-class women in Paris, often employed in the garment trade, who were known for their independence and social mobility.
In this lithograph, Vernier captures a social encounter between two young women and two military officers. The scene is rendered with the precise, fluid line quality characteristic of mid-century French lithography. The composition balances the figures across the frame, using the contrast between the women's modest, structured attire and the officers' elaborate uniforms to suggest a narrative of social friction. The officer on the right, seen from behind, gestures towards the women, while the women maintain a composed, slightly detached posture.
Vernier was a frequent contributor to the satirical journal Le Charivari, where he documented the social habits and fashions of the Parisian bourgeoisie and working classes. His work provides a window into the urban life of the July Monarchy. The technical execution demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation, using hatching and cross-hatching to create depth within the figures and the surrounding environment. The print is marked with the publisher's details, Chez Aubert & Cie, which was a hub for political and social satire in Paris during this period. This piece functions as a social observation, capturing a fleeting moment of interaction with a dry, observational wit. The print remains a record of the period's social dynamics, reflecting the interplay between military presence and civilian life in the streets of Paris.
