This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I depicts a hawk perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned beside a branch of a kiri tree. The composition reflects the early Ukiyo-e tradition, where bold, calligraphic lines define the form of the bird. The artist employs a limited palette, allowing the stark contrast between the dark ink of the feathers and the muted yellow of the foliage to dictate the visual rhythm of the piece.
Kiyomasu I was a central figure in the Torii school, a lineage primarily associated with the production of kabuki theatre posters and actor portraits. This work, however, demonstrates the school's capacity for naturalistic subjects, known as kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower pictures. The hawk is rendered with a sense of alertness, its eye fixed towards the horizon, while the feathers are delineated with precise, repetitive strokes that suggest texture without relying on excessive shading. The background remains largely unadorned, a common feature in early eighteenth-century prints, which directs the viewer's attention to the anatomical details of the raptor and the stylised leaves of the kiri.
The print exhibits the characteristic vigour of the Torii style, which often favoured strong, assertive outlines over the delicate shading seen in later periods of Japanese printmaking. The paper shows signs of age, providing a neutral backdrop that complements the earthy tones of the subject. This piece offers a glimpse into the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre, showing how artists balanced the demands of commercial print production with the observation of the natural world. It is a representative example of the graphic clarity that defined the work of the Torii school during the Genroku era.
