A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro, depicting a geisha in a moment of quiet reflection with her shamisen.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro captures a geisha in a moment of quiet contemplation. As a student of the master Kitagawa Utamaro, Kikumaro adopted the bijin-ga style, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The composition centres on the subject's face, framed by an elaborate hairstyle adorned with hairpins. She rests her chin upon her hand, a gesture that suggests a pause in her musical practice. Beside her, the neck of a shamisen, a traditional three-stringed instrument, rises vertically, providing a structural counterpoint to the soft curves of her posture.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the facial features and the texture of the kimono. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones that allow the viewer to focus on the expression and the delicate patterns of the fabric. The use of negative space around the figure creates a sense of intimacy, drawing the observer into the private sphere of the performer.
Kikumaro was active during the early 19th century and maintained the aesthetic standards established by his teacher. His work often features these close-up portraits, known as okubi-e, which prioritise the psychological state of the sitter over environmental detail. The print serves as a record of the fashion and cultural practices of the time, specifically the role of the geisha within the urban society of Edo. The subtle interplay between the subject and her instrument reflects the disciplined nature of her craft. This piece is a representative example of the refined portraiture produced during the height of the Ukiyo-e tradition, offering a glimpse into the artistic sensibilities of the era.
