Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, widely known by his pseudonym Grandville, remains a singular figure in nineteenth-century French illustration. This work, depicting a fox attired in the formal dress of a gentleman, demonstrates his characteristic approach to anthropomorphism. Grandville frequently employed animal figures to critique the social hierarchies and political structures of the July Monarchy. By placing a fox in a frock coat and hat, he engages in the tradition of the fable, yet his execution moves beyond simple moralising.
The drawing displays a fluid, calligraphic line quality, typical of his preparatory sketches. The use of ink wash creates a sense of volume and atmosphere, allowing the figure to emerge from the page with a distinct, albeit satirical, presence. The fox stands in a pose of affected elegance, holding a cane, which serves to heighten the absurdity of the human costume.
