A Favourite Custom, completed in 1909, represents the mature period of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. The painting depicts a Roman bathhouse, a subject the artist returned to frequently throughout his career. Two women are shown bathing in the foreground, while other figures occupy the marble-clad space behind them. The composition relies on a vertical orientation, drawing the eye from the water-filled basin up towards the sunlit entrance in the background.
Alma-Tadema was known for his archaeological precision. He studied Roman architecture and domestic life, ensuring that the textures of the marble, the drapery of the garments, and the architectural details were rendered with high fidelity. The light in this work is soft, filtering through the space to create a sense of calm. The palette is dominated by cool whites, creams, and pale greys of the stone, contrasted against the warm skin tones of the figures and the muted colours of the clothing.
