A nocturnal scene by Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ depicting a man dreaming on a rooftop, where ethereal figures emerge from the smoke of his pipe.
Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ, a student of Charles Gleyre and Jean-Léon Gérôme, produced this work during the height of the Orientalist movement in French painting. The scene depicts a man resting upon a rooftop overlooking a nocturnal cityscape, likely inspired by the artist's travels in Egypt. The composition contrasts the grounded, material reality of the sleeper with the ethereal, translucent figures emerging from the smoke of his pipe.
The sleeper is positioned on a patterned rug, surrounded by objects that suggest a life of quiet seclusion. His posture is relaxed, his hand still holding a long pipe stem. Above him, a luminous female figure and a small putto appear as manifestations of his subconscious. The artist employs a precise, academic technique to render the textures of the textiles, the stone architecture, and the soft glow of the apparitions against the deep blue of the night sky. A black bird perched on the parapet adds a touch of stillness to the scene.
Lecomte du Nouÿ was known for his technical precision and his interest in historical and ethnographic subjects. This painting demonstrates his ability to blend realistic observation with imaginative, dreamlike narratives. The work invites the viewer to consider the boundary between the physical environment of the city and the private, internal world of the individual. The cool, nocturnal palette is punctuated by the warm tones of the rug and the sleeper's garments, creating a balance between the dark atmosphere and the central figures. This piece remains a representative example of the late nineteenth-century fascination with the Near East, filtered through the lens of European academic tradition.
