A detailed seventeenth-century topographical painting depicting the Dutch East India Company trading post in Bengal.
This painting depicts the Dutch East India Company (VOC) trading post in Bengal, likely the factory at Cossimbazar. Hendrik van Schuylenburgh, a Dutch painter active in the seventeenth century, provides a detailed bird's-eye view of the compound. The composition centres on the white-walled, U-shaped structure, which served as both a residence and a warehouse for the Dutch merchants. The surrounding grounds include orderly gardens, palm trees, and various outbuildings, illustrating the colonial infrastructure of the period.
The scene captures the daily operations of the factory. Figures are scattered throughout the courtyard and the surrounding fields, suggesting the movement of goods and people. The artist employs a high vantage point to document the layout of the site, a common practice for recording colonial outposts for the VOC administration back in the Netherlands. The muted palette reflects the atmospheric conditions of the region, with soft light filtering through a cloudy sky over the flat terrain.
Van Schuylenburgh spent time in the East Indies, and his work provides a specific visual record of European commercial interests in South Asia during the mid-seventeenth century. The painting functions as a historical document, recording the architecture and the spatial organisation of the Dutch presence in Bengal. The inclusion of local flora and the specific arrangement of the buildings offer insight into how these foreign entities integrated into the local environment. This work remains a primary source for historians studying the material culture and logistical operations of the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century.
