A serene woodblock print by Ikeda Eisen depicting a ferry boat crossing the snow-dusted Sumida River in Edo.
This woodblock print by Ikeda Eisen captures a winter scene along the Sumida River in Edo. The composition focuses on a ferry boat crossing the water, filled with passengers shielded from the cold by straw capes and umbrellas. The artist employs a clear division of space, separating the immediate foreground of the boat and snow-covered bank from the distant, tree-lined shore. The use of Prussian blue for the water provides a stark contrast against the white snow, a technique that gained popularity in Japanese printmaking during the early nineteenth century.
Eisen, a prolific designer of the Ukiyo-e school, was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of the city and its surroundings. In this work, the stillness of the winter air is conveyed through the muted tones of the sky and the deliberate placement of the figures. The pine tree on the left, bent under the weight of snow, acts as a framing device that draws the eye toward the river. The print reflects the technical precision of the period, with fine lines defining the textures of the clothing and the ripples on the water surface. The inclusion of traditional Japanese cartouches in the upper right corner provides the title and artist signature, maintaining the conventions of the genre.
This print offers a glimpse into the daily life of Edo-period travellers. The quietude of the scene is balanced by the rhythmic movement of the boatman and the varied postures of the passengers. It is a representative example of the landscape prints that became a primary interest for artists following the success of earlier masters. The work remains a clear documentation of the seasonal changes that defined the aesthetic sensibilities of the time.
