Beskrivning

A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, depicting a Darjeeling oak intertwined with a flowering climber, captured in oil during her travels in India.

Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented the flora of the world with scientific precision. During her extensive travels in India, she produced a vast collection of works that now reside in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This specific study captures a Darjeeling oak, identified by its distinctive, robust foliage and acorn structures, intertwined with a delicate climbing plant.

North worked primarily in oil on board, a choice that allowed her to capture the specific textures of leaves and the subtle colour variations of petals while working in challenging field conditions. Her approach was direct and observational. She avoided the stylised conventions of many contemporary botanical illustrators, preferring to depict plants in their natural habitats rather than as isolated specimens against a white background. In this composition, the viewer sees the oak leaves and the hanging clusters of the climber against a glimpse of a distant, pale blue sky, suggesting the high-altitude environment of the Himalayas.

Her work provides a record of plant species as they appeared in the late nineteenth century. The attention to the serrated edges of the oak leaves and the pendulous, pink-and-orange blooms of the climber demonstrates her ability to balance scientific accuracy with a clear, painterly eye. North travelled alone across six continents, a rare feat for a woman of her era, and her paintings remain a primary source for understanding the botanical diversity she encountered. This print offers a view into her method, showing how she combined the rigour of a naturalist with the aesthetic sensibilities of a trained artist, creating a clear, unadorned representation of the natural world.

Artist Biography

Marianne North

North considered marriage a terrible experiment that turned women into a sort of upper servant. Her inheritance depended on staying single, and she kept it. Between 1871 and 1885, she travelled to fifteen countries in fourteen years, almost always alone.

She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.

She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
