Xie Shichen
Xie Shichen was a Ming dynasty artist from Suzhou who departed from the amateur traditions of his peers. Many artists of the Wu School remained at home, but Xie Shichen travelled across China to see mountains and rivers in person. He earned a living through his art. This professional status allowed him to produce works on a scale larger than typical scholars.
Biography
His style merges the soft brushwork of Shen Zhou with the energetic strokes of the Zhe School. In works like Clouds and Waves at the Wu Gorge or Returning to the Village in a Rainstorm, he uses bold ink washes to suggest weather. He used the axe-cut stroke to define rocks. His compositions balance empty space with dense areas of ink. This creates a sense of physical distance in the frame.
Modern collectors value these prints for their clarity and spatial depth.
