Maria Katharina Prestel
Maria Katharina Prestel established a successful independent career in London after separating from her husband and artistic partner in Germany. While many female artists of the eighteenth century worked within family workshops, Prestel moved to England in 1786 to manage her own professional output. She was a specialist in the aquatint technique, a method that allowed printmakers to mimic the tonal washes of watercolour paintings. Her move to London placed her in a competitive print market where she produced plates for prominent publishers.

Biography
Her work focuses on animal subjects and religious themes, including studies of livestock and celestial figures. Prestel used a combination of etching and aquatint to create subtle gradations of tone. This technical precision is visible in works like Two Cows, Two Sheep, and a Goat, where the texture of animal hair and the softness of the sky are rendered with clarity. Unlike the sharp lines of traditional engraving, her prints possess a painterly quality that captures light and shadow through ink saturation.
Modern collectors value Prestel for her technical mastery and her role as a self-sufficient woman in the history of printmaking. Her prints offer a calm, naturalist aesthetic for contemporary interiors. The subjects, ranging from pastoral scenes to botanical details like the Chalice Vine, provide a sense of historical character. These works represent a bridge between the precision of scientific illustration and the atmosphere of Neoclassical art.
