Kaigetsudō Ando
Kaigetsudō Ando operated his studio from the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo, yet he never produced a single woodblock print during his lifetime. The famous images attributed to him were actually ink paintings on silk or paper. His pupils created the woodblock prints that bear his signature, a common practice within the Kaigetsudō school to meet the demand for popular imagery.
Biography
His artistic approach focused on the depiction of bijin-ga, or beautiful women. He utilised thick, heavy lines to define the silhouettes of his subjects. These figures occupy the entire frame, often positioned against an empty background to draw attention to the patterns of their kimonos. This deliberate focus on posture and textile design creates a singular aesthetic identity for his studio.
Modern collectors value these prints for their bold graphic quality. The clarity of the line work translates well to contemporary interior spaces.
