Franz von Lenbach

Franz von Lenbach was the son of a master mason and initially trained in his father's trade before pursuing art. This background influenced his disciplined approach to his work. While he became the premier portraitist for the German elite, he also produced works depicting Bavarian peasants. His painting of a young boy on a sandy knoll shows a different side to the man who painted emperors. He captured rural life with the same technical precision he applied to heads of state.

Biography

His technique relied on a palette of brown and golden tones. He studied old master methods to achieve a sense of authority in his subjects. In his portraits of Bismarck and Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, he focused on the dignity of the sitter's office. However, his portraits of women and children, such as Marion Lenbach or Tina Joest, use a softer touch. He often used photography as a tool to capture poses before translating them into oil on canvas.

Collectors value Lenbach for his ability to command a room. His portraits provide a window into the late nineteenth-century Bavarian court. The dark, atmospheric backgrounds make these prints easy to integrate into traditional or contemporary interiors. They offer a sense of history without the need for ornate settings. His sketches, like Portrait Head of a Girl, show a more intimate side of his skill.
