A 1910 charcoal and watercolour study by German Expressionist Max Pechstein, featuring a seated figure rendered with fluid lines and bold colour washes.
Max Pechstein, a founding member of the Die Brücke group, produced this study in 1910. The work captures a seated female figure through economical, fluid charcoal lines. Pechstein prioritises gesture and form over anatomical precision, a characteristic approach within the German Expressionist movement. The figure is positioned on a mat rendered with broad, energetic strokes of yellow, blue, and red watercolour.
By 1910, Pechstein had moved away from the more rigid structures of academic training, favouring a spontaneous method of mark-making. The composition is deliberately sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to function as an active element of the image. The application of colour is non-naturalistic, serving to balance the composition rather than describe the physical environment. The blue accents on the figure's hair and the mat create a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the page.
This piece reflects the broader interest among Die Brücke artists in primitive aesthetics and the raw, unmediated expression of the human form. The lack of background detail forces the viewer to focus entirely on the posture of the subject and the interplay between the charcoal outlines and the washes of colour. It is a direct, unpretentious example of early twentieth-century modernism, demonstrating how minimal intervention can convey a sense of movement and presence. The work remains a clear example of Pechstein's ability to synthesise observation with a subjective, emotive response to his subject matter.
