A classic Impressionist study of the Italian Riviera, capturing the unique light and exotic flora of Bordighera in 1884.
In early 1884, Claude Monet travelled to the Italian Riviera, specifically the town of Bordighera, seeking new light and subject matter. This work captures the specific atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast, where the intense sun alters the perception of colour and form. Monet was particularly taken by the exotic vegetation, which he found challenging to translate onto canvas due to its density and unusual shapes.
The composition is dominated by a large agave plant in the foreground, its spiky, blue-green leaves contrasting with the verticality of a tall, flowering stalk. To the right, the architectural elements of a villa emerge, partially obscured by palm trees. In the distance, the mountains rise, rendered in soft, atmospheric blues and purples that suggest the heat haze of the region. Monet employs his characteristic short, broken brushstrokes to build the image, allowing the colours to mix optically rather than on the palette. This technique creates a sense of movement and flickering light across the entire surface.
Unlike his earlier works in the Seine valley, the light here is sharper and more unforgiving. Monet struggled with the sheer brightness of the Italian sun, which often washed out the details of the buildings and foliage. He compensated by using a higher-keyed palette, incorporating pinks, ochres, and varied greens to describe the garden. The painting reflects his ongoing investigation into how light dictates the appearance of a scene, rather than the physical properties of the objects themselves. By focusing on the interplay between the structured villa and the wild, untamed garden, Monet provides a view of a specific place at a specific moment in time, capturing the essence of the Mediterranean environment during the late nineteenth century.
