A dynamic, late-period abstract work by Piet Mondrian, featuring a rhythmic arrangement of primary-coloured squares on a diamond-shaped canvas.
Victory Boogie Woogie is the final, unfinished work by Piet Mondrian, created during his residence in New York City. The painting represents a departure from his earlier, strictly defined black grid structures. Instead, Mondrian employs a rhythmic arrangement of small, coloured squares and rectangles that suggest movement and syncopation, echoing the jazz music he encountered in the city. The composition is presented on a diamond-shaped canvas, which adds a sense of instability and energy to the work.
Technically, the piece is a collage of sorts. Mondrian used small pieces of coloured tape and paper, which he moved around the surface to test different spatial relationships before fixing them in place. This process reveals his analytical approach to painting, where the act of creation was a continuous adjustment of balance and proportion. The palette remains restricted to his signature primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) alongside white and grey, yet the application is more fragmented than in his earlier Neo-Plasticist works.
By the time of his death in 1944, the surface remained in a state of flux, with some areas showing the physical evidence of his revisions. The work captures the frenetic pace of urban life and the artist's attempt to translate the experience of modern music into a visual language. It is a study in the tension between order and chaos, where the rigid geometry of his earlier career gives way to a more dynamic, pulsating visual field. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, where it remains a primary example of his late-period experimentation with form and rhythm.
