A delicate Japanese woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicting two attendants preparing for New Year's celebrations, from a private poetry club series.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei belongs to the surimono tradition, a genre of privately commissioned prints often distributed among members of poetry clubs. As a member of the Katsukawa school, Shuntei was a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei and produced works that often featured actors or scenes from daily life with a refined, delicate touch. This specific piece originates from the series Seven Women as the Gods of Good Fortune for the Hanagasa Poetry Club, which blends mythological themes with contemporary Edo-period customs.
The composition depicts two young attendants preparing for New Year's celebrations. One figure stands, holding a box containing a lobster, a traditional symbol of longevity and prosperity in Japanese culture. The other figure kneels nearby, surrounded by objects associated with the season, including a sea bream and decorative items. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the print indicates its function as a literary accompaniment, where the visual imagery complements the poems written by club members.
Technically, the print displays the characteristic flat perspective and clean lines associated with early 19th-century Japanese woodblock printing. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft blues, and subtle ochre to create a sense of quiet domesticity. The borders are decorated with a repeating pattern, a common feature in surimono that frames the central narrative. Shuntei uses thin, precise lines to define the figures and the objects, maintaining a balance between the human subjects and the symbolic items of the New Year. This work provides a glimpse into the social and cultural activities of Edo-period poetry circles, where art and literature were closely linked in private exchange.
