A detailed Early Netherlandish triptych wing depicting donors Thomas Isaacq and his wife with their patron saints in a domestic setting.
This work represents the exterior wings of a triptych, a common format for devotional art in the Early Netherlandish period. The artist, known as the Master of the Magdalen Legend, was active in Brussels during the early sixteenth century. The panels depict the donors, Thomas Isaacq and his wife, presented by their respective patron saints, Thomas and Margaret.
The composition follows the conventions of the time, placing the donors in a domestic setting that bridges the gap between the sacred and the secular. The figures are rendered with careful attention to the textures of their garments, from the heavy folds of the red robes to the delicate lace of the headwear. The interior space is constructed with a focus on linear perspective, leading the eye toward the windows that reveal a distant, hilly view.
Details such as the tiled floor, the fireplace, and the small objects scattered throughout the room provide a sense of daily life, despite the formal nature of the commission. The inclusion of the patron saints serves to legitimise the piety of the donors, a standard practice in Flemish altarpieces. The Master of the Magdalen Legend is recognised for this specific approach to figure modelling and the use of light to define form. The painting offers a glimpse into the social and religious customs of the period, where the wealthy merchant class sought to secure their spiritual future through the donation of such works to churches or private chapels. The preservation of these panels allows for an examination of the technical skills employed by workshops in Brussels during this era, particularly in the handling of oil glazes to achieve depth and luminosity.
