A masterful etching from Whistler's Venice period, capturing a dark archway and a quiet social scene with delicate, atmospheric line work.
Traghetto, No. 2 is a significant work from the First Venice Set, a collection of twelve etchings produced by James McNeill Whistler during his stay in Venice between 1879 and 1880. Commissioned by the Fine Art Society in London, this period marked a recovery in the artist's career following his bankruptcy. The etching depicts a dark, cavernous archway leading to a sunlit courtyard, a common architectural feature in the Venetian urban fabric.
Whistler employs a sophisticated use of line to contrast the deep, impenetrable shadows of the tunnel with the bright, airy space beyond. The foreground features a group of figures seated at a table, rendered with economical, suggestive strokes that define their posture and presence without excessive detail. To the left, a woman holds a child, providing a sense of scale and domestic reality to the scene. The foliage hanging above the archway is captured with delicate, calligraphic marks, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the needle.
This work demonstrates Whistler's interest in the atmospheric qualities of light and shadow, rather than mere topographical accuracy. The composition relies on the interplay between the heavy, dark masses of the architecture and the lighter, more open areas of the paper. By leaving areas of the plate relatively clean, Whistler allows the texture of the paper to contribute to the overall visual effect. The print reflects the artist's focus on the everyday life of Venice, capturing quiet moments in the city's less-visited corners. It remains a primary example of his technical skill in printmaking, where the economy of means produces a sense of depth and mood. The work is held in several major collections, including the British Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, where it is studied for its contribution to the nineteenth-century etching revival.
