A dynamic watercolour by John Marin, capturing the kinetic energy and vertical perspective of New York City through fluid brushwork and modern abstraction.
John Marin, a central figure in the development of American Modernism, produced this watercolour during a period when he was deeply engaged with the verticality and energy of New York City. His approach to the urban environment avoids literal representation, opting instead for a fragmented, rhythmic interpretation of the city's architecture and atmosphere.
In this work, Marin employs his characteristic shorthand: quick, gestural brushstrokes and areas of unpainted paper that allow the medium to breathe. The composition captures the dizzying perspective from the heights of Radio City, where the rigid geometry of the skyscraper meets the fluid, shifting light of the sky. Rather than documenting the physical structure in detail, Marin focuses on the sensation of height and the kinetic force of the metropolis. The colour palette is restrained, relying on washes of blue, ochre, and grey to define the spatial relationships between the buildings and the surrounding air.
Marin's technique often involved the use of heavy, dark lines to anchor his compositions, which he would then soften with translucent layers of pigment. This method creates a sense of motion, as if the city itself is in a state of constant flux. His work from the 1930s reflects a mature understanding of how to translate the experience of modern urban life into a visual language that is both personal and immediate. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the essential structure and rhythm of the scene. This print offers a clear view into the artist's process, showing how he balanced control with spontaneity to convey the spirit of New York.
