A detailed 1865 etching by Félix Bracquemond depicting predatory birds nailed to a wooden door, rendered with precise cross-hatching and technical mastery.
Félix Bracquemond, a central figure in the nineteenth-century etching revival, produced this work in 1865. The composition depicts a series of predatory birds and a bat nailed to the surface of a wooden door. This subject matter draws upon the tradition of the trompe-l'oeil hunting trophy, a motif common in European art to demonstrate technical skill in rendering textures, such as feathers, wood grain, and metal hardware.
Bracquemond employs precise, controlled lines to define the anatomy of the specimens. The birds are splayed against the vertical planks of the door, creating a stark contrast between the organic forms of the animals and the rigid, man-made structure. A small wooden sign is attached to the lower section, bearing a French inscription that comments on the nature of the birds as thieves and scavengers. This inclusion adds a layer of moralising narrative to the visual display, a common device in seventeenth-century Dutch still-life painting which Bracquemond adapts here for the medium of etching.
The technical execution reflects Bracquemond's mastery of the copper plate. He uses varying densities of cross-hatching to suggest the depth of the shadows cast by the carcasses and the weathered texture of the timber. The composition is balanced yet unsettling, focusing the viewer's attention on the grim reality of the hunt. By choosing this subject, the artist engages with the long history of the vanitas tradition, where the depiction of dead game serves as a reminder of mortality and the cycle of nature. The work remains a fine example of his ability to elevate a mundane, somewhat macabre scene into a sophisticated study of form and light.
