A collection of ten lithographs by Odilon Redon, exploring the surreal and psychological themes of Gustave Flaubert's literary work.
Odilon Redon produced his first series of lithographs based on Gustave Flaubert's novel, The Temptation of Saint Anthony, in 1888. This collection represents a shift in his creative output, moving away from his earlier 'noirs' toward a more narrative exploration of the subconscious. Redon found in Flaubert's text a fertile ground for his own visual vocabulary, which often occupied the space between reality and dream.
The lithographs demonstrate Redon's mastery of tonal variation. He utilised the medium to create deep, velvety blacks that contrast with ethereal, luminous whites. This technical approach allows for the emergence of strange, hybrid creatures and spectral figures from the shadows. The imagery is not a direct illustration of the text but rather a series of visual responses to the psychological states described by Flaubert. The figures often appear isolated, suspended in a void that suggests a state of internal contemplation or spiritual crisis.
In these works, the viewer encounters floating heads, disembodied eyes, and monstrous forms that defy biological logic. Redon's ability to render these phantasmagorical subjects with a sense of physical weight is a hallmark of his style. The compositions are frequently sparse, focusing on the interaction between light and darkness to define the space. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Redon forces the viewer to confront the ambiguity of the subject matter. These prints remain some of the most significant examples of Symbolist graphic art, capturing the anxieties and imaginative leaps of the late nineteenth century. The series reflects a preoccupation with the unseen, the irrational, and the power of the human mind to conjure its own demons.
