A classic Rococo masterpiece by Jean-Honore Fragonard, depicting a playful scene of courtship within a lush, atmospheric garden setting.
The Swing, painted in 1767, is a definitive example of French Rococo art. It depicts a young woman in a voluminous pink dress suspended in mid-air on a swing. Her suitor, hidden in the foliage below, gazes upward, while an older man operates the swing from the shadows. The composition is set within a lush, overgrown garden, where the play of light and shadow creates a sense of theatricality.
Fragonard utilised a light, fluid brushwork that defines the Rococo aesthetic. The painting is characterised by its pastel palette, soft textures, and the sense of movement captured in the woman's airborne pose. The subject matter reflects the playful, often flirtatious nature of aristocratic life in the mid-eighteenth century. The inclusion of the statue of a cupid, holding a finger to his lips, adds a layer of narrative irony to the scene, suggesting secrecy and illicit romance.
The painting was commissioned by a courtier, Gabriel-Francois Doyen, who initially requested a more pious subject. Fragonard instead produced this work, which focuses on the frivolity and artifice of the period. The dense, dark greenery of the garden provides a contrast to the illuminated figure of the woman, drawing the eye directly to the centre of the action. This work remains a primary reference for the study of eighteenth-century French painting, capturing the spirit of a society preoccupied with leisure and courtly games. Our museum-grade print captures the delicate colour transitions and the atmospheric depth of the original oil painting, ensuring that the fine details of the foliage and the subject's attire are preserved with accuracy.
