A tranquil scene of the Caillebotte family estate at Yerres, capturing two figures walking through the manicured park grounds in 1875.
Painted in 1875, this work depicts the family estate at Yerres, a location that provided the subject for many of Gustave Caillebotte's early works. The composition features two figures, seen from behind, walking along a gravel path that curves through the manicured grounds. The man wears a light-coloured suit and a straw hat, while the child beside him wears a dark coat and matching hat. Their presence provides a sense of scale and domestic quietude against the backdrop of the family residence.
Caillebotte employs a structured approach to the scene, balancing the natural elements of the trees and lawn with the geometric precision of the flower beds. The foreground is dominated by two large, oval-shaped floral arrangements, which introduce blocks of red and white colour against the muted greens and browns of the park. The house sits in the distance, framed by the dark foliage of the surrounding trees. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on fleeting light effects, Caillebotte maintains a clear, almost photographic clarity in his depiction of the estate. The perspective is carefully managed, drawing the viewer along the path toward the house. This painting reflects the artist's interest in the bourgeois lifestyle and the leisure activities of his social circle during the late nineteenth century. The work remains a clear example of his ability to capture the atmosphere of a private, domestic space with technical precision.
