A classic genre scene by Francisco Goya, depicting a group of young men flying a kite in a bright, open-air setting.
Painted in 1778, The Kite is one of the cartoons Goya produced for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara. These works were intended as models for tapestries to decorate the dining room of the Prince of Asturias at the El Pardo Palace. The scene depicts a group of young men in fashionable eighteenth-century attire, gathered on a hillside to fly a kite.
Goya captures a moment of leisure and social interaction. The composition is organised around the central figure who points towards the sky, guiding the viewer's eye to the kite itself. The figures are rendered with a lightness of touch, characteristic of the artist's early career in Madrid. The palette is dominated by soft blues, warm ochres, and earthy tones, reflecting the bright, open-air setting.
Unlike his later, darker works, this piece displays the influence of the Rococo style, favouring charm and decorative appeal. The inclusion of a small dog in the foreground and the distant architectural forms adds a sense of depth and realism to the scene. The figures exhibit a relaxed posture, suggesting a carefree atmosphere typical of the genre scenes Goya created for the Spanish royal court during this period. The work remains a fine example of his ability to observe contemporary life, blending naturalism with the requirements of decorative art. The clear, blue sky occupies a large portion of the canvas, providing a sense of space and airiness that contrasts with the detailed clothing and expressive faces of the subjects. This print captures the original oil painting's texture and colour balance, offering a clear view of Goya's early mastery of light and composition.
