Description
A detailed seventeenth-century Flemish genre scene depicting the bustling interior of a grand kitchen. David Teniers the Younger captures the preparation of game, fish, and vegetables with precise observation.
David Teniers the Younger was a prolific Flemish artist known for his depictions of peasant life and interior scenes. This work, painted in 1644, presents a large kitchen filled with activity and an abundance of food. Teniers often recorded the domestic staff and culinary preparations of the aristocracy, specifically the court of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in Brussels, where he was the court painter.
The composition is divided into distinct areas of activity. On the left, a falconer stands with a bird of prey on his wrist, accompanied by several hunting dogs. This suggests the arrival of fresh game from a hunt. In the foreground, a variety of fish and vegetables alongside different types of poultry are scattered across the floor, rendered with careful attention to texture and form. The centre of the room features figures engaged in the preparation of these ingredients, while a large fireplace dominates the background.
The floor is a catalogue of seventeenth-century foodstuffs. Large cabbages and root vegetables sit in the lower left corner, while a variety of flatfish and round fish are piled on the right. A kitchen boy in a red jacket points towards the centre, directing the movement of supplies. Behind him, an older man carries a large fish, possibly a sturgeon, towards the preparation tables.
In the background, the scale of the kitchen is made apparent by the massive chimney breast. Several pots hang over the fire, and spits of meat are visible. The staff are shown in various stages of work, from plucking birds to tending the hearth. This focus on the mechanics of a great house was a popular theme for Teniers, who excelled at capturing the textures of copper pots and earthenware jugs alongside feathered game.
The artist employs a realistic approach to the space, using the wooden beams of the ceiling and the receding floor tiles to create a sense of depth. The figures are not idealised; they are shown as functional parts of a complex domestic machine. This painting is currently held in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
