A study of light and colour in Claude Monet's garden at Giverny, featuring irises along a path.
Claude Monet painted this work at his home in Giverny, where he spent the latter decades of his life cultivating his gardens. The composition captures a path winding through beds of irises, framed by the trunks of trees that provide a vertical rhythm to the scene. Monet employs short, broken brushstrokes to represent the play of light across the petals and foliage, a technique characteristic of his mature style.
The colour palette relies on variations of violet, blue, and green, punctuated by the earthy tones of the path. Rather than defining forms with hard outlines, Monet allows the colours to merge, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The light appears filtered through the canopy, softening the edges of the plants and creating a unified visual field. This approach reflects his interest in the transient effects of light and the specific conditions of the garden at a particular moment in time.
Monet's garden at Giverny became his primary subject during this period. He designed the space to provide a controlled environment for his observations of nature. By focusing on the irises, he explores the relationship between colour harmony and the structure of the garden. The absence of a clear horizon line draws the viewer into the space, encouraging an engagement with the texture of the paint and the density of the planting. This work demonstrates his ability to transform a domestic setting into a subject of sustained study, moving away from the traditional depiction of space toward a more subjective experience of colour and light.
