A preparatory study by Antoon Derkinderen depicting the parable of the five foolish virgins, rendered in graphite and watercolour with a focus on rhythmic line.
This work is a preparatory study by the Dutch artist Antoon Derkinderen, depicting the biblical parable of the five foolish virgins. The composition shows the figures in a rhythmic, procession-like arrangement, their bodies draped in simple robes as they are pulled toward a demonic figure on the right. The artist employs a linear approach, with visible construction lines that reveal the planning process for a larger mural project. The inclusion of the Latin inscription 'DOMINUM CONFITEMURI' at the top suggests a liturgical or ecclesiastical context for the final work.
Derkinderen was a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts movement, known for his interest in monumental art and the integration of text with image. His style often draws upon medieval aesthetics, prioritising flat planes of colour and clear, rhythmic outlines over realistic depth. The palette is restrained, utilising muted earth tones and soft washes that allow the structural integrity of the drawing to remain visible. The figures are stylised, reflecting a move away from naturalism toward a more symbolic representation of the narrative. This study offers a view into the artist's methodical approach to large-scale commissions, where every element, from the lettering to the posture of the figures, is carefully calibrated for architectural placement.
The work captures a moment of moral consequence, yet the treatment remains formal and controlled. By stripping away excessive detail, Derkinderen focuses on the narrative flow and the decorative potential of the scene. The repetition of the figures creates a sense of inevitability, aligning with the solemnity of the subject matter. This print preserves the delicate balance between the artist's initial graphite sketches and the subsequent application of watercolour, providing a clear window into the creative process of a master of Dutch Symbolism.
