Beschrijving
A portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cumberland by Thomas Gainsborough, featuring the couple in a wooded setting with loose, expressive brushwork.
This portrait depicts Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, and his wife, Anne Horton, within a wooded setting. Thomas Gainsborough, a master of the British portrait tradition, employs his characteristic fluid brushwork to capture the texture of the subjects' clothing and the surrounding foliage. The oval composition directs the viewer's attention to the couple, who stand in a relaxed, informal pose, accompanied by a small dog. To the right, a third figure, Lady Elizabeth Luttrell, sits in the background, adding a sense of depth and narrative to the scene.
Gainsborough was known for his ability to integrate human subjects with their environment. Here, the dappled light filtering through the trees creates a soft, atmospheric quality that softens the edges of the figures. The palette consists of muted greens, browns, and soft whites, which unify the composition. The Duke wears a dark coat and breeches, while the Duchess is dressed in a light, layered gown that reflects the fashion of the late eighteenth century. The brushwork is loose and expressive, particularly in the treatment of the trees and the Duchess's dress, which demonstrates the artist's preference for painterly effects over rigid detail.
This work reflects the social status of the sitters while maintaining the intimate, conversational tone often found in Gainsborough's portraiture. The inclusion of the park-like setting suggests the leisure activities of the aristocracy during this period. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's approach to portraiture, where the personality of the sitters and the mood of the environment are given equal weight. The composition is balanced, with the figures positioned to create a sense of harmony within the oval frame, avoiding the formality often associated with royal or aristocratic portraiture of the time.

The Duke and Duchess of Cumberland - Thomas Gainsborough
Artist Biography
Thomas Gainsborough
He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1727. His father went bankrupt in 1733. He moved to London as a teenager and trained under the French engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot. By his thirties he was one of the two dominant portrait painters in Georgian England, the other being Joshua Reynolds. The rivalry with Reynolds defined both their careers.
The Blue Boy is probably his most famous painting, though he would have preferred to be remembered for his landscapes. On his deathbed he reconciled with Reynolds. Reynolds later wrote that the Royal Academy had lost one of its greatest ornaments. Gainsborough died in 1788, aged sixty-one.
