A masterful woodcut from the Life of the Virgin series, depicting the ritual circumcision of Jesus with exceptional detail and technical precision.
The Circumcision is a woodcut from the Life of the Virgin series, a project Albrecht Dürer worked on between 1500 and 1511. This particular print demonstrates the technical mastery Dürer brought to the medium of woodcut, moving beyond the simple outlines of his predecessors to create complex tonal variations and spatial depth.
The scene depicts the ritual circumcision of the infant Jesus within a temple setting. Dürer fills the composition with a dense crowd of figures, each rendered with individualised facial expressions and period-appropriate attire. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the folds of heavy garments and the textures of the architectural elements. Above the central group, an elaborate, scrolling decorative structure adorns the archway, showing the influence of late Gothic ornamentation.
To the left, a figure stands holding a tall staff, acting as a visual anchor that guides the viewer into the crowded interior. The perspective is carefully constructed, drawing the eye toward the central action where the priest performs the rite. Dürer includes his well-known monogram, the AD tablet, in the lower right corner, a mark of his professional identity. The print is notable for its balance between the crowded, busy nature of the temple scene and the clear, rhythmic arrangement of the figures. It remains a primary example of how Dürer elevated the woodcut from a functional illustrative tool to a sophisticated medium capable of conveying narrative drama and human emotion. The work reflects the artist's interest in both the human condition and the rigorous application of perspective, which he studied extensively during his travels in Italy.
