A detailed 1606 etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological birth of Hercules and the intervention of Juno.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts a specific moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses, illustrating the myth of Alcmene in labour. Tempesta, a prolific Florentine printmaker, was known for his technical facility with the etching needle and his ability to translate complex narrative scenes into clear, graphic compositions. The scene captures the intervention of Juno, who attempts to delay the birth of Hercules by crossing her knees, a gesture represented here with classical restraint.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, Alcmene is supported by attendants within a domestic interior, her posture conveying the physical strain of the event. The drapery folds are rendered with precise, parallel hatching, a hallmark of Tempesta's graphic style. In the background, visible through an architectural opening, Juno stands in a commanding pose, observing the scene. The contrast between the intimate, human struggle of the birth and the divine interference occurring in the distance provides a narrative tension typical of early seventeenth-century Italian printmaking.
Tempesta's work often focused on classical mythology and historical subjects, intended for a learned audience familiar with Latin texts. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, 'Iuno compressis genibus Alcmenae partum differt', confirms the print's function as a visual accompaniment to literary tradition. The etching demonstrates the artist's command of perspective and human anatomy, qualities that made his prints popular across Europe during the period. This piece offers a clear example of the transition from late Mannerist sensibilities toward the more structured, dramatic narratives that would define the Baroque era. The print is executed with a focus on line clarity, ensuring the narrative elements remain legible despite the density of the figures and the architectural setting.
