A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku portraying the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III with the artist's characteristic focus on individual expression.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III in a performance role. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which the artist created a series of actor portraits for the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions common in ukiyo-e, choosing instead to capture the specific, often exaggerated, facial features and physical mannerisms of his subjects.
In this composition, the actor is shown in a three-quarter pose, wearing a formal kamishimo costume. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the heavy fabric and the actor's posture. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of grey, soft red, and pale yellow to focus attention on the figure. The background is minimal, featuring a simple horizontal band that suggests a stage setting without providing unnecessary detail. The artist's signature appears on the right side, accompanied by the publisher's seal.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture remains distinct within the history of Japanese printmaking. By focusing on the psychological presence of the actor rather than a polished aesthetic, he provides a direct view into the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Sharaku, maintaining clean edges and subtle colour gradients across the paper surface. This piece is an example of the artist's ability to convey character through posture and expression, stripped of extraneous decorative elements.
