A 1926 study by Le Corbusier, this work exemplifies the Purist movement through its use of simplified geometric forms and a restrained, balanced colour palette.
Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous painting practice throughout his career. This work, titled Tête nègre (étude), dates to 1926, a period when he was deeply involved in the development of Purism alongside Amédée Ozenfant. Purism sought to return to a sense of order and clarity in art, rejecting the fragmentation found in later Cubist developments in favour of geometric precision and balanced compositions.
The painting displays a simplified, almost sculptural approach to the human form. The head is rendered through flat planes of colour, reducing facial features to essential shapes. The palette is restrained, utilising muted tones of grey, olive green, and blue, punctuated by a sharp application of red. This choice of colour reflects the Purist interest in universal forms and the rejection of decorative excess. The composition is deliberately flattened, focusing on the relationship between the subject and the surrounding space rather than traditional portraiture techniques.
By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs attention to the structural logic of the image. The lines are clean and purposeful, defining the contours of the face with a graphic sensibility that mirrors his architectural drafting. This study demonstrates the artist's interest in the synthesis of form and colour, treating the canvas as a site for spatial experimentation. The work remains a clear example of his desire to apply the same principles of efficiency and clarity found in his buildings to the medium of painting. It is a study in reduction, where the subject is transformed into a series of interlocking planes, creating a sense of stability and calm. The work provides insight into the broader aesthetic concerns of the 1920s, where artists sought to reconcile the human figure with the emerging machine age.
