A Post-Impressionist still life by Vincent van Gogh, painted in 1889, depicting a collection of personal items on a table in Arles.
Painted in January 1889, this work follows Vincent van Gogh's return to the Yellow House in Arles after his initial hospitalisation. The composition features a collection of personal objects arranged on a wooden table, including a plate of onions, a pipe, a bottle, a candle, and a copy of the 'Annuaire de la Santé' by F.V. Raspail. The presence of the medical text and the onions, which were considered a health remedy at the time, reflects the artist's preoccupation with his own physical and mental recovery during this period.
Van Gogh employs a characteristic application of paint, using short, rhythmic brushstrokes that create a sense of movement across the surface. The colour palette is dominated by warm yellows and ochres, contrasted against the cool blue of the background and the deep green of the earthenware pot. The perspective is slightly tilted, a common device in his work that draws the viewer into the domestic space. The inclusion of the sealing-wax and the letter suggests a moment of correspondence, grounding the scene in the artist's daily reality. This painting is a clear example of his ability to imbue mundane objects with emotional weight through colour and texture. The work is currently held in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
