Beschrijving
A dramatic religious composition by El Greco, depicting the spiritual ecstasy of St. Francis through elongated forms and intense light.
Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, produced several versions of the Stigmatisation of St. Francis during his time in Toledo. This composition captures the moment the saint receives the stigmata, a subject that allowed the artist to explore themes of spiritual ecstasy and physical suffering. The figures are elongated, a hallmark of the artist's mature style, which prioritises emotional expression over anatomical precision.
St. Francis is depicted in a state of religious fervour. His posture is dramatic, with his gaze directed towards a celestial light that illuminates the upper portion of the canvas. The contrast between the dark, rocky environment and the ethereal glow creates a sense of isolation, focusing the viewer on the internal experience of the saint. The heavy, folded drapery of the Franciscan habit is rendered with fluid brushwork, adding a sense of movement to the static scene.
El Greco utilised a limited palette, relying on deep shadows and sharp highlights to define the forms. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the earthly realm of the saint towards the divine source of light. This work reflects the Counter-Reformation climate of the period, where religious art aimed to inspire devotion through intense, personal encounters with the divine. The artist's approach to space is non-traditional, as he flattens the background to compress the figures into the foreground, ensuring the psychological weight of the event remains the primary focus. The inclusion of the skull and the simple, rugged terrain reinforces the ascetic nature of the saint's life. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the tension between the material world and the spiritual vision that defines El Greco's body of work.
