A classic bijin-ga painting by Kaigetsudō Dohan, featuring a courtesan in a graceful turning pose, rendered with bold lines and a refined colour palette.
This work is a classic example of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Kaigetsudō Dohan was a member of the Kaigetsudō school, a group active in the early 18th century in Edo, modern-day Tokyo. The school is known for its bold, monumental figures that occupy the majority of the pictorial space.
The courtesan is depicted in a three-quarter view, turning her head to look over her shoulder. This pose, known as mi-kaeri, creates a sense of movement and engagement with the viewer. Her kimono is rendered with strong, confident lines, featuring a prominent striped pattern that contrasts with the floral motifs on the lower section of her garment. The artist uses a limited palette of red, blue, and earthy tones, which allows the focus to remain on the silhouette and the elegant posture of the subject.
Unlike later ukiyo-e prints that often utilised woodblock techniques, the Kaigetsudō school primarily produced paintings on silk or paper. The brushwork is deliberate and firm, reflecting the school's preference for clarity and strength over delicate shading. The figure stands against a plain background, a hallmark of the school's style, which removes unnecessary distractions to emphasise the subject's presence. The mounting of the original work includes decorative borders with stylised leaf patterns, typical of the period's presentation for hanging scrolls. This print captures the aesthetic ideals of the Genroku era, where the fashion and grace of the courtesan class were central to the cultural life of the city.
