A detailed 1772 etching and engraving depicting a dramatic historical scene of soldiers under command, rendered with classical precision.
This etching and engraving, dated 1772, depicts a dramatic historical scene centred on the figure of Darius. The composition is structured within a formal architectural frame, typical of eighteenth-century book illustration. The narrative focus is on a group of soldiers forcibly removing a man under the command of a central authority figure, who gestures with an air of absolute power. The scene is set against a backdrop of classical arches and stone masonry, which provides a sense of theatrical staging to the event.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the period, with fine cross-hatching used to define the shadows and textures of the garments and the surrounding stone architecture. The figures are rendered in a manner consistent with the Neoclassical interest in clarity, order, and moral narrative. The inclusion of text beneath the image serves to anchor the visual drama within a specific literary or historical context, a common practice for prints intended for publication or educational collections during this era.
The artist, David Klippink, operated as an engraver and publisher in the Netherlands. His work often involved the reproduction of designs by other artists, as indicated by the inscription 'S. Bleys, inv. et del.' on the plate, which credits the original invention and drawing to S. Bleys. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of printmaking in the eighteenth century, where the roles of designer, engraver, and publisher were distinct yet integrated. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic preferences of the time, prioritising legibility and narrative coherence over decorative excess. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Enlightenment, where historical and moralising themes were frequently disseminated through accessible, high-quality engravings.
