A fine etching by Parmigianino depicting a sleeping Cupid, rendered with fluid lines and delicate cross-hatching typical of the Mannerist period.
This etching captures the figure of a sleeping Cupid, a subject that allowed Parmigianino to explore the soft, rounded forms of a child in repose. The artist employs a delicate system of cross-hatching to define the musculature and the gentle curvature of the body. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting subtle shadows that give the figure a sense of volume against the textured ground.
Parmigianino was one of the first Italian artists to embrace etching as a medium for his own creative expression, rather than merely a tool for reproducing paintings. His approach to the copper plate mirrors his drawing style, with fluid, rhythmic lines that follow the contours of the subject. The composition is relaxed, with the figure sprawled across the foreground, his bow and quiver discarded nearby. The background is suggested through light, sketchy strokes, keeping the focus entirely on the anatomical study of the sleeping deity.
As a practitioner of Mannerism, Parmigianino often favoured elongated proportions and artificial grace. In this work, however, he demonstrates a keen observation of natural form, balanced by the technical freedom that etching provided. The print reflects the experimental spirit of the sixteenth-century Italian school, where the artist sought to capture the immediacy of a sketch in a reproducible format. This piece offers a clear view into the technical proficiency of the artist, showing how he manipulated the needle to create varying degrees of tone and texture. It remains a fine example of the period's interest in classical mythology and the human figure, presented with the characteristic elegance associated with the artist's hand.
