A striking maritime scene by Alfred Wallis, featuring the Longships Lighthouse rendered in his signature naïve style on a dark, moody palette.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties after the death of his wife. He worked primarily on scavenged materials, such as cardboard packaging and scraps of wood, using limited supplies of ship paint. This work depicts a maritime scene featuring the Longships Lighthouse, a structure situated off the coast of Land's End in Cornwall.
Wallis ignored traditional rules of perspective and scale. He arranged elements based on their importance to the narrative of the sea rather than their physical distance from the viewer. The ships appear to float in a flattened space, their forms simplified into basic shapes. The lighthouse stands as a vertical anchor against the dark, moody tones of the water and the distant coastline. His application of paint is direct and unrefined, reflecting his lack of formal training and his reliance on memory and experience.
His approach to composition often involved placing objects in a way that suggests a map-like view, where multiple viewpoints exist simultaneously. The dark, monochromatic palette emphasises the harsh conditions of the Atlantic. The stark contrast between the white lighthouse and the deep, murky tones of the sea creates a sense of isolation. Wallis did not seek to replicate reality, but rather to capture the essence of the maritime life he knew intimately. His work gained attention from artists such as Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who recognised the authenticity and raw energy in his output. This print captures the texture of the original cardboard support, preserving the tactile quality of his process. It offers a window into the singular vision of an artist who painted purely for his own satisfaction, far removed from the conventions of the professional art world.
