A haunting depiction of the myth of Saturn, painted by Francisco Goya during his final years in Spain as part of his Black Paintings series.
Saturn Devouring His Son is one of the fourteen Black Paintings that Francisco Goya painted directly onto the walls of his house, the Quinta del Sordo, during his final years in Spain. This work depicts the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus, known as Saturn in Roman mythology, who consumes his children to prevent them from usurping his power. Goya presents the figure with wide, frenzied eyes and a dishevelled appearance, emerging from a void of darkness. The composition focuses on the raw, visceral act of destruction, with the Titan clutching the mangled body of his offspring.
The application of paint is loose and expressive, characteristic of Goya's late period. He utilised a restricted palette of ochre, grey, and black, punctuated by the stark white of the Titan's eyes and the red of the blood. Unlike earlier depictions of this myth by other artists, which often maintained a sense of classical order, Goya's interpretation is stripped of traditional narrative context. The figure is not a god in a formal setting, but a monstrous entity caught in a moment of frantic, irrational violence.
These works were never intended for public display. They remained in the private residence of the artist until they were transferred to canvas decades after his death. The lack of preparatory sketches or written commentary from Goya regarding these images has led to various interpretations, ranging from political allegory concerning the state of Spain to personal reflections on ageing and mental decline. The work remains a singular example of the artist's departure from his earlier courtly style, moving toward a more subjective and psychological mode of expression.
