A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Johann Georg Mentzel depicting Empress Anna of Russia with imperial regalia and heraldic symbols.
This engraving by Johann Georg Mentzel depicts Anna Ivanovna, Empress of Russia from 1730 to 1740. Mentzel, a German engraver active in Leipzig, produced this work during a period when European monarchs frequently commissioned prints to disseminate their image across the continent. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century royal portraiture, placing the subject in a formal interior setting defined by heavy drapery and architectural elements.
Anna Ivanovna is shown in three-quarter view, holding a sceptre in her right hand. Beside her, a cushion supports the imperial orb, a symbol of her authority. The lower portion of the print features the Russian imperial coat of arms, the double-headed eagle, which reinforces her sovereign status. Her attire reflects the fashion of the Russian court during the 1730s, featuring a structured bodice and elaborate lace detailing. The background includes a glimpse of a palatial interior, adding a sense of depth to the scene.
Mentzel employs precise line work to render the textures of the fabric, the metallic sheen of the regalia, and the soft contours of the Empress's face. The engraving technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the folds of the curtain to the lighter areas on the lace and skin. The inscription at the base identifies the subject as the reigning Russian Empress, a common practice for prints intended for public or diplomatic circulation. This work provides a clear example of the formal visual language used to communicate power and dynastic legitimacy in the early eighteenth century. It remains a valuable record of the iconography associated with the Romanov dynasty during a period of transition in Russian history.
