A fine example of Jin Nong's signature lacquer script calligraphy, featuring bold, archaic characters and traditional red collector seals.
This work displays the distinctive calligraphic style of Jin Nong, a central figure among the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou during the Qing dynasty. Jin Nong developed a unique script known as 'lacquer script' (qishu), which is characterised by thick, blunt strokes that mimic the appearance of lacquer applied to wood. This aesthetic choice departed from the fluid, elegant lines favoured by traditional scholars, opting instead for a bold, archaic quality that draws inspiration from ancient stone inscriptions.
The text consists of poems composed for his friend and patron, Ma Yueguan. The arrangement of the characters is deliberate, maintaining a balanced tension across the paper. The vertical columns are spaced with precision, allowing the weight of the ink to carry the visual rhythm of the piece. Red seals, applied by the artist and subsequent collectors, provide a visual counterpoint to the black ink, marking the provenance and authenticity of the document.
Jin Nong was a polymath, active as a painter, poet, and calligrapher. His work often reflects a scholarly detachment from the rigid academic standards of his time. By focusing on the structural integrity of each character, he created a visual language that prioritises clarity and strength. The paper itself retains a neutral tone, providing a subtle background that does not distract from the ink work. This piece offers a clear example of the literati tradition in eighteenth-century China, where the act of writing was considered an extension of the artist's personality and intellectual pursuits. The composition remains restrained, avoiding unnecessary flourishes to maintain a focus on the rhythmic repetition of the brushwork.
