A detailed 1794 military map of the fortified town of Aire-sur-la-Lys, engraved by Dutch artist Cornelis van Baarsel.
This 1794 map by the Dutch engraver Cornelis van Baarsel depicts the fortified town of Aire-sur-la-Lys in the Artois region of France. Published in Amsterdam by J. Allart, the work provides a precise military perspective of the town's defensive structures during the late eighteenth century. The central citadel is rendered in a distinct red wash, which contrasts with the muted green and grey tones applied to the surrounding fields, waterways, and outlying settlements.
Van Baarsel employs a clear, technical line quality typical of period cartography. The map details the star-shaped fortifications, known as trace italienne, which were designed to withstand artillery fire. Roads radiating from the centre connect the town to nearby villages such as Saint-Martin, Gardinghem, and Blaringhem. The inclusion of a compass rose and a scale bar at the bottom indicates the practical, navigational purpose of the document. The surrounding terrain is marked with topographical symbols representing wooded areas and agricultural plots, providing a comprehensive view of the strategic environment.
As a piece of historical cartography, the print captures the intersection of military engineering and graphic art. The engraving process allows for the inclusion of fine details, such as the specific naming of gates and rivers, which remain legible despite the scale. The hand-applied colour is restrained, serving to clarify the boundaries of the fortifications rather than to decorate the surface. This print offers a window into the geopolitical tensions of the 1790s, when such maps were essential tools for understanding the movement of armies across the European continent. It is a specimen of Dutch printmaking that balances functional information with aesthetic clarity, suitable for those interested in military history or the development of European urban planning.
