A refined ink and colour painting on silk by Ogata Kōrin, depicting a pheasant amidst tall grasses in the traditional Rinpa style.
Ogata Kōrin, a central figure of the Rinpa school during the Edo period, produced this work using ink and colour on silk. The composition features a pheasant partially obscured by tall grasses and flowering plants. The artist employs a restrained approach, allowing the negative space of the silk to define the atmosphere. The bird is rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, while the surrounding flora displays a looser, more fluid application of pigment.
The Rinpa style is known for its decorative qualities and its use of gold or silver backgrounds, though this particular piece relies on the natural tone of the silk to provide a neutral ground. Kōrin balances the naturalistic depiction of the bird with the stylised representation of the plants. The pheasant, with its distinct red facial markings and patterned plumage, serves as the primary subject. The long, sweeping lines of the grasses create a sense of movement, guiding the eye across the vertical format of the hanging scroll.
Kōrin was active in Kyoto, where he developed a reputation for his bold designs and his ability to adapt traditional themes into a modern aesthetic. His work often reflects a synthesis of classical Japanese literature and the natural world. This piece demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, where varying degrees of saturation create depth without the need for complex perspective. The subtle application of colour on the flowers provides a muted contrast to the monochromatic tones of the grasses and the bird's body. As a representative example of Kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, this work captures a quiet moment in nature, rendered with the technical precision and artistic sensibility characteristic of Kōrin's mature period.
