A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryusai, depicting the courtesan Oshu of the Yamaguchiya in elaborate seasonal attire.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryusai depicts Oshu of the Yamaguchiya, a celebrated courtesan of the Yoshiwara district. The work belongs to the series 'Models for Fashion: New Designs as Fresh as Young Leaves' (Hinagata wakana no hatsu moyo), a collection that functioned as a visual catalogue of contemporary trends in kimono design and hair styling. Koryusai, a former samurai who turned to printmaking, became known for his refined depictions of women and his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format, though this piece follows the standard oban size.
The composition features Oshu accompanied by a young attendant, or kamuro. Both figures are dressed in elaborate garments adorned with seasonal motifs, reflecting the high fashion of the mid-Edo period. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the fabric and the precise arrangement of the hair ornaments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted pinks, and subtle ink washes to create a sense of harmony. The figures are positioned against a neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to the patterns on their robes and their graceful postures.
Koryusai was a contemporary of Suzuki Harunobu and adopted many of the stylistic innovations associated with the development of full-colour printing. His work provides a window into the social life of the pleasure quarters, where courtesans were treated as arbiters of style. This print captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, where the interplay between human form and textile design was central to the visual culture of Edo Japan. The inclusion of the series title and the artist's signature in the cartouches confirms its place within this influential project, which documented the rapid shifts in fashion during the late 18th century.
