A detailed genre painting by Fei Qinghu depicting rural life and agricultural activities based on the classical Odes of the State of Bin.
This work by Fei Qinghu, also known as Fei Zhaoyang, depicts a scene from the 'Seventh Month' section of the Odes of the State of Bin, a classic collection of ancient Chinese poetry. The composition illustrates the agricultural activities and seasonal rhythms of rural life during the early Qing period. The artist employs a traditional narrative style, balancing the depiction of human figures with the natural environment.
In the upper left, labourers are shown working in the fields, reflecting the agrarian focus of the original text. To the right, a figure on horseback accompanied by attendants suggests the presence of an official or landowner overseeing the harvest. The figures are rendered with precise brushwork, while the surrounding rocks and trees provide a structured, decorative frame for the narrative. The colour palette remains grounded in earth tones, with subtle applications of blue and green on the rock formations, typical of the period's court-influenced aesthetic.
Fei Qinghu was active during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, a time when the imperial court encouraged the production of works that referenced classical literature and Confucian values. This painting functions as a visual interpretation of the poetic verses, which describe the transition of seasons and the duties of the populace. The silk support provides a smooth surface that allows for the fine detail seen in the clothing and the facial expressions of the figures. The work demonstrates a clear organisation of space, using the winding stream and the placement of the figures to guide the viewer through the different stages of the seasonal cycle. It is a representative example of the genre painting tradition that sought to harmonise human activity with the natural order, a theme central to the cultural output of the eighteenth-century Chinese literati.
